  6. For the second Saga series I have continued with the visual saga of my ancestors, who came to N.Z from "Old World Zealand" in Denmark, to settle the 40 Mile Bush.

They lived in isolation with other Danes in the midst of dense primeval bush, chopping down the trees to create a nordic village (Mauriceville West) I imagine them as Vikings, sailing the seas in search of territory, incongruous, exotic, "Wilde Folke" arriving into a primordial Eden. I see them as exotic, as they see the bush as exotic, the flora and fauna are projected through the cultural imagination of the Danes.

Upon arrival the battle was with the forest, once worshipped, now the enemy.

While researching for photos of the 40 Mile Bush, I realized it no longer existed, (conquered by the Scandanavians). The only remnant seemed to be the reserve of Puhaka on the slopes of Mt. Bruce famous for the birth of Manukura the White Kiwi, a fylgja perhaps?

I based Enemy and Ragnarok on other old photos I found about the 40 Mile Bush. The paintings are portable murals, influenced by verdure tapestries, they create an immersive feeling of calm, a green room, an idealized, safe, forest home.
