Born 1959 Te Kopuru, Northland, of Dalmation descent and from a farming background.
Trained as an engineer at Whangarei Engineering and Construction Co. Studied art and
raw materials with Yvonne Rust at the Northland Craft Trust in Whangarei, 1982. Was
encouraged to paint by Tony Fomison. An interest in raw materials, paint technologies and the early renaissance led to processes involving clay as painting pigment, traditional gesso grounds, beeswax resin media and combining ceramic and sculptural elements with painting. Studio is currently in Northland. Exhibits at Bowen Galleries, Wellington. Has exhibited in solos and group shows since 1984 at public galleries - Sarjeant Gallery, Whangarei Art Museum, Otaru Art Museum, Japan...in dealer galleries, Bowen Galleries, Oedipus Rex Gallery, Gregory Flint Gallery, Milford Galleries, No 5 Gallery and work with RKS Art, Auckland. In 1998 was recipient of Southland Art Foundation's artist in residence programme, Invercargill. Commissions completed: Continuum, carved and painted mural commission at NCT Whangarei 1988 He Tohu a sign, public commission for New Zealand Police, Dunedin, 1994 Hands across the water, a Dalmation pou, 7 metres carved, painted, constructed sculpture for the new Whangarei City Library, December 2006 installed 2007. A finalist in Norsewear Art Awards 1994, Visa Gold Art Awards 1995, Waikato National Art Award 2003 and Wallace Arts Trust Art Award (1994 - 2007)
Winner of BDO Spicers Northland Painting and Drawing Award 2007 judged by John Gow, John Leech and Gow Langsford Galleries. Public collections: The Hocken Library, Petrocorp, Southland Museum and Art Gallery, Eastern Southland Gallery, Local Government New Zealand, Wallace Arts Trust, Ikon Collection, London. In private collections in New Zealand and overseas.
