Colin Luxton

Colin Luxton was born in Auckland, 1971. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (painting) from the University of Canterbury, Ilam, 1996, under the tutelage of Riduan Tomkins. Colin was awarded the Visa Gold Art Award in 1998 and was the Artist in Residence at Rangi Ruru College in Christchurch in 2004. He finished his Post Graduate Diploma at Massey University, Wellington in 2009 and is now completing his Masters.
His work has concentrated on the figure, particularly the drawn figure, for the last fifteen years. The present work translates the consciousness of the drawings into paint and sees the figure's distillation into the immediacy of the face. Just as we recognize each other physically through kinesthesia, our face-to-face encounters press upon our understanding in ambiguous ways, ways that often circumvent conscious thought and language.

"There is a peculiar energy to the face, a presence that speaks its own language. Perhaps it is the first we learn from the softness of the cot. Eyes and mouth crinkle from a past, touching the present with each breath, each inflection"

(from his exhibition "Draught" at Bowen Galleries, Wellington, June-July 2011).
