Colin Luxton completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Canterbury University in 1997, under the tutelage of Riduan Tomkins. In 1998 he won the Visa Gold Art Award and in 2004 was granted a residency at Rangi Ruru College. This year he is undertaking a Master of Fine Arts at Massey University in Wellington.
The current work attempts to locate the human figure in connection to its extensive tradition and its contemporary currency. Of interest is the complex relationship of the viewer to the work, in particular the irrational, somatic exchange between a figurative image and the body of the viewer. Colin is exploring the implications of this dynamic in the work's greater context. Narrative connotations are latent, submerged beneath the figure's immediate presence.
